How it works

One conversation. One connection.
Everything else follows.

Commn uses AI — informed and shaped by our very human team — to listen first and never rush. It works out what someone actually needs, then connects them to the right place: an existing local group, a community organisation, or if they truly need it, an individual Commner. From a friendly call to a crisis referral, it finds the fit.

It works out what fits — a local group, a service, a Commner, or a crisis line.

3

The right connection is made

Someone's week changes

And in time, many of them become Commners themselves.

Hello — I'm glad you're here. What's going on for you right now?
I've been feeling really isolated since I moved here. I don't know anyone.
C
That takes courage to say. How long have you been there?

Everybody needs somebody.
Yours is closer than you think.

No account. No referral needed. Just tell us what's going on — we'll take it from there.

Common questions

Everything you might want to know

Is Commn really free? For everyone? +
Yes — completely. There are no sign-up fees, no subscription tiers, no premium features locked behind a paywall. Whether you're looking for help or offering it, you will never be asked for a penny. Commn is funded entirely through grants and voluntary donations, and we're committed to keeping it that way. Always.
How do I know the Commners are safe? +
Every individual Commner in the network is DBS checked — not just those doing home visits, but everyone. It's one of the things that makes Commn different. We also require all Commners to subscribe to the DBS Update Service (free for volunteers), which lets us re-verify their status instantly at any time. On top of that, we verify identity, collect references, and monitor all connections through our CommnSense safeguarding framework. Commners are never given someone's personal contact details until a connection is confirmed and logged.
What if I just want a phone call — not a home visit? +
Absolutely fine — in fact that's where most connections start. When you have a conversation with us, we'll ask what feels comfortable for you. A regular friendly call, a coffee somewhere local, or a visit at home — you set the pace and we match accordingly. Nothing happens that you haven't agreed to.
I'm not in crisis — can I still use Commn? +
Yes — and we'd love that. Commn isn't just for people in crisis. It's for anyone who wants more connection, purpose, or community in their life. Whether you want to find a local group, meet people nearby, or just feel less invisible where you live. And if you want to give rather than receive, becoming a Commner is always open.
What if I want to refer someone else — a neighbour, a parent? +
This is one of the most common ways people come to Commn, and it works really well. You can start a conversation on someone else's behalf — just tell us about their situation and location and we'll take it from there. We'll always make sure the person is happy to be contacted before anything happens.
I'm thinking about becoming a Commner — what does it involve? +
You just join our network — as an individual, a group, or an organisation. You're not committing to a rota or a set number of hours. You're saying you're available if someone nearby needs what you can offer. You might get one request a month, or none for a while. You can step back at any time.
My organisation wants to partner with Commn — how does that work? +
We work with councils, NHS trusts, housing associations, faith organisations and businesses who want to invest in their communities. Through CommnGood, we can deploy our platform within your area, provide reporting on social impact, and help you meet loneliness and social prescribing targets. Get in touch via our contact page and we'll set up a conversation.

Every community has people waiting for you.

Our story

There are people all around you.
Commn helps you find them.

Our founder was laid up unable to move after a sudden injury. His wife was there throughout — taking him to A&E, making calls, organising prescriptions, doing everything. In that waiting room, something struck him: so many people were there entirely alone. An ambulance can get you through the doors, but it can't sit with you. Yet all around the room, strangers of completely different ages and backgrounds were quietly looking out for each other — offering a charger, fetching water, asking if someone was okay. The normal walls had come down, and what was underneath was just human kindness, ready to connect. One question kept coming back: what do people do when there's nobody there?

Not just elderly people. Not just people in obvious crisis. Anyone who has ever needed a hand and had nobody nearby to ask. The friend who moved cities after a breakup. The mother whose family is abroad. The man in his thirties who somehow stopped leaving the flat and can't quite explain when it happened. The new parent who doesn't know a single person on their street. The person who is surrounded by people and still feels entirely alone.

Loneliness in the UK affects over 3.8 million adults. But the problem isn't really a shortage of good people — it's a shortage of connection between them. The person two streets away who would happily help doesn't know you need it. The Commner who wants to give time can't find who to give it to. Everyone is waiting for someone else to go first.

Commn exists to make those connections happen.

We use a warm, conversational AI — informed and shaped by our very human team — to understand what someone actually needs — not what a form thinks they need — and then connect them to a real, vetted human nearby. Not a charity worker. Not a professional. A neighbour. Because what most people are really missing isn't a service. It's a person.

We're built on the belief — informed by faith, confirmed by experience — that every person has equal worth and equal right to thrive. That isolation doesn't discriminate by age, background, or postcode. And that the people best placed to help are usually already living within a mile of the people who need it.

CommnSense

Our safeguarding and trust framework. Every Commner is verified, every connection is monitored, and every person who comes to us is protected. Common sense, built into every interaction.

CommnGround

Our community events programme — bringing unlike people into the same room. Coffee mornings, shared meals, skill swaps. The things that used to happen naturally, now organised with a little intention.

CommnGood

Our grant and partnership programme for councils, NHS trusts, and businesses who want to invest in their communities. The common good, made measurable.

What we believe

Everyone has equal worth. Our matching is guided only by proximity and need. Age, background, circumstance, faith — none of it changes who gets help or who gets to give it.

Human connection can't be automated. AI brings people to the door. A person has to walk through it. We will never replace the human layer.

Free means free. No freemium. No upsell. No data sold. Commn is free for everyone who uses it, and it always will be.

Purpose is part of the prescription. Loneliness and purposelessness are the same problem. We don't just connect people — we help them find something worth getting up for.
